In 2006, because our formal president Chen Shen Bain had do something like corruption and he also argue that he want Taiwan to independent. A lot of people group in front of president place to protest. They wanted Bain to fall out of his president power.
The group of people, about one million of them, Sit in front of the president place and brought up why they wanted Bain to fall out of his president power. The first reason they argued that Bain need to leave office is because of Bain corrupted. He receive a lot of money from big company and bank in Taiwan, and remitted the money to bank account in Swiss. The amount of this money is about 20 million dollars USD and many other unknown account. People wanted he must returned the money.
The second reason that people wanted he to release his president power is because he suggest Taiwan must independent from China. From 60 years, independent always a sensitive problem between China, Taiwan, and U.S. government. He was the president in that time. If he really made Taiwan independent. China will attack Taiwan, so people wanted he stop this kinds of crazy behavior.
The protest was lasted for many days, but Bain insisted he have never corrupted. Because of the protest, many people went strike and they also made big traffic jam in the capital. Now, Bain was in the jail because of his corruption. But he also insist that he have never corrupted. Both his family member like wife, son, daughter, and son-in-low are also involved. All of them will be jailed in future.

Patrick - It's too bad that Bain's time as president ended badly. I read that he did some good things as mayor of Taipei, and in the early years of his presidency.
ReplyDeleteAlso, his story is so wonderful because he was the son of sugar plantation workers who couldn't read or write. However, he went to university because he was a top student. Amazing! I hope he can make his life clean and help people again!
